My First Match

Yesterday was the first match where I actually got some game time. It was our second trial game, and the team for which we play for will be announced on Tuesday. I have no doubt that I will be on the senior 2 squad. I have to say that my performance yesterday was not all that great, but I happy to get a full 60 minutes in. And to think I haven't even played a match in just under 11 months. I'm definately feeling the soreness today. Everyone knows that sore neck after the first match of the season.

The game, overall, went well. We played 4 30 minute quarters. I switched eac h quarter with the other first five named Sam. Sam has been around the club for a while and is pretty good. My kicking for touch was absolutely obscene to say the least, but kicking down field was real good and showed the coaches that I have a boot. The team won by 6 tries to 5. We didn't do any kicking for post. I really have alot to work on it seems. They say basically I need work on my passing and coming on the ball with set pieces.

My coach, Tomahou, says that after thinking about it, he thinks fullback is my position. So I think i'll be getting some time in with fullback, but he said he'll still work me in first five. I'm not too happy with fullback b/c for me it's a little slow. I knew going into the game that the only real confident part of my game right now would be my defense and I was right. The coaches noticed it as well, all of them. To quote the premier coach "That guy just doesn't miss, does he?" So Tomahou thinks with my boot and great defense I would be a great fullback. As long as they still give me some time at first five i'll be happy but if me playing fullback will keep me in the game i'll be happy with that as well. Our next match might be on Thursday, then our season begins in about a week and 1/2.

On Saturday I decided to go for a bike ride to Upper Hutt City. They have a walking/biking trail that extends from Petone to Upper Hutt which follows along side the Hutt River. In Upper Hutt they have a park which has a disc golf course, so this was my goal. The biking course is a 29 kilometer course, so it's a ways. It took me about 2 hours to get to the park, then I was pretty tired. After finding the park, I soon realized that I didn't have the time to figure out the course and the way the holes were laid out so I had to split. I wouldn't have time to make it all the way back to Petone in time for work, so I had to take my bike on the train back to town. All in all it was cool to see more of the srea and it was very tiresome. I got alot of sun on my ride as well.

Today I set up a savings account and also an automatic debit to my saving account from my weekly paycheck so I can make sure I save money for my travels. For the rest of the day I'm going to enjoy my St. Patricks Day and probably frequent the Irish Bar I live above later in the day. Cheers mates and Happy St. Patricks day

Gaday Mate!

Sound like your getting grounded below the equator. I was anxious to hear more since the last posting. Good to hear you now have an idea on your standing. Great positioning on your first international outing.

I'm still recovering...still not at work yet.

Will be writing more later.

cheers.

If your coach sees you at fullback, your a fullback. I told you your position may change. Go with it and accept it. Also realize that the fullback position at the level you will be playing it is very dynamic. A lot of joining the attack between the centers, as well as weak side movements off the scrum . Plus you get audience appreciation from the open field tackles. And your not getting hammered by the open side flanker all day!

Yeah, after training at fullback yesterday I realized that if they say I'm a fullback then that's what I am. If this is the position that will take me to the next level then that's what I'll do.

Thats the right attitude! And realize that if fullback does indeed become your selected position, you will also be listed on the depth chart as played fly-half. Meaning you may move to that position if an injury or failure of fit test occurs. I am actually glad to hear your coach moved you to fullback. I believe you will excel quicker there. Be ready for those up and unders. Timing is everything. You MUST be fearless in going for that ball. GOOD LUCK!!!
